Description

SMLG Co-Op Website – Collaborative Web Design & Development Project
During my internship at SLMG Co-Op, I had the opportunity to create a website wireframe for a company called “The Elite Event Co.” This project involved a complete makeover of their existing website, and my primary objective was to enhance the user experience by making the site more interactive and engaging. The original website lacked interactive features such as hover effects and click feedback, which made the overall experience feel static and less responsive.

My redesign aimed to address this by incorporating more intuitive interactivity, such as visual feedback for user actions like hovering or clicking. Additionally, I focused on improving the website’s redirects to make them more visible and accessible to users, ultimately making the site more user-friendly.

Process

To start the redesign process, I first conducted research into how similar companies in the event planning industry structured their websites and what features were most effective. From my research, I noticed that key elements included a review section to build trust, a gallery showcasing past successful events and clients, an events section outlining the services offered, and an about page that introduces the company and its founder, highlighting their passions and methods. I took note of these successful features and made sure to incorporate them into my wireframe, ensuring that the website would be both functional and appealing to the target audience.

One particular challenge with this project was adhering to a required style guide provided by the client. While it was helpful in maintaining brand consistency, there were some issues with the typefaces that had been chosen, especially with the first and second heading fonts. The typefaces clashed when used together, creating a busy visual hierarchy that was not visually appealing. To address this, I had to adjust the layout to use only one heading style at a time, which helped streamline the typography and reduced the clutter. Despite this limitation, I was able to come up with multiple design variations and enhancements that met the client’s expectations while adhering to the style guide.

A significant part of my process involved creating detailed layouts in Figma, which allowed me to visualize how the user would interact with the website. For each interaction, I described the reasoning behind the design decisions, emphasizing how these changes would enhance the overall user experience. My aim was to provide the client with a clear vision of how the new website would not only be visually appealing but also strategically designed to guide users through the site and encourage them to engage with key areas, such as the event services and the gallery. The changes were intended to drive more traffic to important pages, ultimately helping the business generate more leads and conversions.

Reflection

"While the project did not reach full completion, the process of designing the Elite Event Co. website provided a valuable opportunity to refine my understanding of user experience. I am confident that the strategic design decisions made would have had a positive impact on the company."
